Summary of Major Discussions

1. OCTS Team, ADEOS- Ocean Biology and GLI- Ocean Group Joint Workshop (Dr. Saino)

Dr. Saino reported the splinter meeting results. A summary follows.
  • The team recommended that a new NRA for GLI be released.
  • Action item: Binning algorithm
    The OCTS Sensor Team have studied the difference produced by different binning algorithms (namely averaging over linear scale chlorophyll a or over log-scale chlorophyll a concentrations). Discussion is still needed to secure compatibility between OCTS and SeaWiFS level 3 binned data.

Comment (Dr. Ishizaka): OCTS and GLI data should be combined to produce better results.

Dr. Sasano reported the results of the atmosphere splinter meetings. A summary follows.
  • 8 presentations were given.
  • Early launch for ADEOS-II and GCOM should be assured.
  • ILAS science team will have a meeting next year, which may be the last meeting.
  • In the ILAS-II splinter, 25 presentations were given. 20 new PI candidates participated.

Dr. Ebuchi reported the splinter meeting results. A summary follows.
  • More than 70 scientists participated.
  • NSCAT have been continuously processed.
  • QSCAT data have been analyzed in last three months.
  • 31 papers were presented.

Question (Prof. Sumi): Prof. Sumi questioned if salinity measurement can be really possible in the way as presented in item 6.
Answer: Yes. JPL practiced salinity measurement as presented.
Question (Mr. Ito): Is it an action item that JAXA shall study the potential collaboration in ADEOS-II, NSCAT, and GCOM data usage?
Answer: No, it is a recommendation.

  • The group recommended that the ADEOS-II Cross-Cal/Val working group be formed and discuss potential candidates for Cross Calibration and Validation that were identified this week.

Dr. Kouda reported the splinter meeting results. A summary follows.
  • 60 papers were presented.
  • 19 scientists participated.
  • The questionnaire was circulated and 10 responses were turned in.

Answer: Data of Geography.

10. AMSR Workshop (Dr. Shibata)

Dr. Shibata reported the splinter meeting results. A summary follows.
  • Algorithm development status; 8 products/ 14 algorithms, 2 revisions of programs before launch.
  • Calibration plans were discussed; SSM/I, TMI, model calculation/sonde, AMR
  • Validation plans were discussed; operational and experimental paths.
  • EOS AQUA launch is slated for 21 December 2000.
  • Home page is being built.
  • 13 new PIs presented their research plans.

This is a joint ADEOS/ADEOS-II workshop. Since AMSR-E is onboard EOS Aqua, the team collaborates with Aqua/ AMSR-E team.

11. GLI Workshop (Dr. Teruyuki Nakajima)

Dr. Teruyuki Nakajima reported the splinter meeting results. A summary follows.
  • Hardware problems were identified; more PFT test data should become accessible to the science community.
  • The team recommended two projects be formed; a reformat GLI analysis project and OCTS + POLDER simultaneous analysis project.
  • Action item 1: JAXA shall conduct more PFT testing.
  • Action item 2: JAXA shall provide relevant PFT data to al l GLI PIs.
  • Action item 3: GLI PIs shall evaluate the amount of the lost geography data due to saturation.
Questions & Answers, and Comments:
Question (Prof. Sumi): Do your proposed projects require JAXA's funding support?
Answer: We proposed those projects two years ago. Those projects are very important and require funding support from JAXA.
Question (Prof. Shimoda): Why didn't you mention existing in-situ networks?
Answer: Because it's too trivial.

B. New action items from this workshop.
(1). The research community will organize an international collaboration in developing the case 2 water algorithm.
(2). JAXA will report the progress status for the action item 2 in the next workshop. NASA and CNES will cooperate.
(3). JAXA/Mr.Ito will investigate as to how JAXA can support an international collaboration in QSCAT/SeaWinds and ADEOS-II/SeaWinds.
(4). JAXA/EORC will provide the available archives with spatial and spectral operation parameters with the handling software to utilize the available AVNIR data. JAXA will mail the result of the action item to the PIs.
(5). JAXA will provide the existing PFT data to the PIs.
(6). JAXA/ADEOS-II Project will investigate if JAXA can conduct additional GLI PFT.
(7). JAXA/EORC and the science team will evaluate the amount of the lost geography data due to saturation.
(8). JAXA/EORC and Project will assess a recommendation that JAXA conducts frequent radiance measurements.
(9). JAXA and PIs will perform GLI and OCTS data and reformatted MODIS data use survey.
(10). JAXA will assess a recommendation to release a new GLI RA.

13. Discussions (All)

Question (Mr. Tasuku Tanaka): When will the next workshop be held?
Answer (Prof. Niwa): Due to an unexpected accident of H-II launch, it is more important to strengthen international collaboration with NASA and CNES.
Answer (Mr. Ito): We tentatively plan to hold the next workshop about one year from now.

  • In last three years, we have utilized the satellite data effectively.
  • Continuous efforts in data acquisition and analysis are vital for effective global monitoring.

15. ADEOS-II Summary (Prof. Sumi)

  • This first ADEOS/ADEOS-II joint workshop is an important asset.
  • Many interesting findings have been achieved from ADEOS datasets.
  • We need to convince the program office to continue earth observing efforts.
  • There are challenging topics such as SST measurement. Satellite monitoring can take an important role in working on those challenges.
  • Global design of satellite monitoring and global collaboration are getting more important.

16. Closing Remarks (Mr. Okuda)

  • Mr. Okuda thanked all participants for their contribution.
  • One of the EORC's responsibilities is to distribute satellite data to scientist in a timely manner.
  • International collaboration is very effective in designing the global observation system, data processing software, and data analysis.
