Dr. Aoki started with a summary of yesterday's meeting and asked that participants check the contents.
He had organised the information into 3 major areas:
1. Algorithms on snow grain size and snow impurities
(1) Atmospheric corrections, especially for aerosols over land
(2) Vertical profile of snow size
(3) Single scattering properties of snow particles in BRDF model
(4) Effect of surface roughness on BRDF model
(5) Algorithm performance test using MODIS data
- Dr. Simpson wanted to check that atmospheric surface pressure ancillary data was included on the list of ancillary data given - as that data would be useful for Rayleigh scattering correction (using point measurements from ancillary data)
- There was a discussion about using interpolation as opposed to each pixel correction and it was agreed that interpolation was to be used. (Product pixel size is smaller than ancillary data so interpolation is necessary, but possible as atmosphere pressure variation is slow over large scale) Dr. Hori pointed out that Fujitsu Ltd. had developed a pixel by pixel method and so ancillary data can be used directly
2. Other algorithms
- Dr. Aoki showed research products listed on OHP (some algorithms finished and others not) Some algorithms are easy, but albedo algorithms may take more time and we are a small group and new member(s) are needed.
3. Cal/Val experiments
- Dr. Aoki explained that the original schedule could be used or could change due to postponement of launch. He had been unable to grasp status of MODIS group. If shift our schedule there will be problem with size of testing site in Japan, and if original schedule - testing in Alaska - there will be a problem with budget.
- Planning an experiment in Antarctica - 2002 - 2004, 3 wintering years. But this schedule could be influenced by postponement of ADEOS-II launch.
- Also planning AMSS and AMR (airborne simulators for GLI and AMSR) for testing effectiveness of combined data. Both can be loaded simultaneously on board one aircraft.
- (But AMR has limited channels - originally 6, but when AMSS is simultaneously loaded on aircraft only higher 3 channels can be used, or half channel.)
Discussion:
- Dr. Simpson confirmed that all meeting contents are to be distributed via email to participants and this was agreed.
- It was discussed that ADEOS-II launch has officially been delayed and will be November 2001 at earliest. Dr. Simpson pointed out that yesterday's meeting had considered use of MODIS data for algorithm testing. Dr. Aoki and Dr. Hori explained the situation for processing of such data within EORC (not systematic, presently being passed out to Chiba and Tokyo Universities) Global processing is not possible, but it was agreed that scenes are all that are needed. Dr. Aoki stated that he would talk to Dr. Nishio about cryosphere processing at Chiba University, probably using own algorithms.
- Dr. Aoki asked Dr. Simpson whether he required a dataset from Japan, to which he replied that they have access to MODIS data and can communicate by email from now on. Agreed to keep each other informed.
- There was a discussion of ground truth data and ATSR data being used to start work while waiting for GLI. Dr. Aoki agreed to send information about past ground truth data to Dr. Simpson who would then check for ATSR data.
- Dr. Aoki showed some examples of data from snow cross section from Hokkaido. Impurities and albedo were measured, using 4 different models. He agreed to also send information to Dr. Simpson on atmospheric effects tested last year in Hokkaido. The next tests in Japan are planned for Feb 2000 and in Antarctica from 2002 (may change due to ADEOS-II launch delay)
- Dr. Simpson felt that with this data and maybe data from Barrow, Alaska, work could be started for AVHRR and ATSR
- Dr. Aoki closed the meeting.
