3. Question and answer session
Q (Dr. Prata): Why is there a 32 bit cloud flag when Steve Ackeman stated that he will supply a 16 bit flag?
A (Mr. Mitomi): Steve Ackeman will be asked to supply a 32-bit flag -under discussion.
Q (Dr. Prata): Why are channels 34-36 being mosaiced over 16 days? The change in temperature over this period will be significant making the product not useful.
A (Dr. Vu Saito): Cryosphere group may have requested these channels and time period.
Q (Dr. Prata): What atmospheric correction is being applied?
A (Dr. Zhang): Only the 1st 9 channels in the input channel list of LTSK1 are considered and only Rayleish correction and ozone correction are applied.
Q (Dr. M. Verstraete): Why is compositing on 16 days done so early in this processing?
*Dr. Verstraete's comment: Compositing results in the generation of a data set where each pixel comes potentially from different day with different atmosphere (aerosols).
Q (Dr. Fujiwara): From when can we use the atmospheric correction data, namely ACLC-Data?
A (Dr. Zhang): After launch and validation of the data.
Q (Dr. Prata): Are all the channels with dots provided after being mosaiced? (Referring to the list of Input channels for L2 algorithms)
A (Dr. Zhang): The planning products will be provided.
- [ JAXA note: As already agree in the last year's workshop and subsequent meetings all the channels with dots will be mosaiced and provided to PIs]
Q (Dr. Muramatsu): How are these channels (channel 28 and 29) adjusted from 250m to 1 km? (Referring to the list of Input channels for L2 algorithms)
A (Dr. Zhang): These bands are obtained from sampling data, which are collected at every 2-km in the nearest neighborhood method. So these are not average values.
*Dr. Verstraete's comment: Compositing on the basis of MVC results in the selection of certain angles of observation. Therefore, this procedure may actually enhance the anisotropy effects in the data.
*Dr. Verstraete's comment: Compositing only serves for those geophysical variables, which vary slowly over 16 days. At last, this may only be useful for looking at vegetation. For any other process, and in particular for any thermal process, compositing results are useless data.
Q (Dr. Prata): Is this process designed to eliminate computing time?
A (Dr. Tateishi): Yes.
Dr. Prata's Comments: If you want to eliminate time, you can remove all those correction processes.
Q (Dr. Fujiwara): Atmospheric correction parameters are obtained using the GLI Data or other satellite data?
A (Dr. Zhang): Other satellite data (TOVS et al.)
Dr. Verstraete's Comments: Some products do not need compositing. It is meaningless to use 16 days for compositing. For my purpose, Level 1 data would be preferable.
Trotter's Comments: Because of the limitation on processing capacity, it would be a good idea to re-check very carefully with the cryosphere group whether mosaicing the thermal channels will really deliver useful data.
Trotter's Comments: Because an important aim of the ADEOS-II project is to supply data that is complementary to the MODIS mission, then perhaps it will be important to determine if the MODIS team performs atmospheric correction before mosaicing. If ADEOS-II mosaiced products are produced with atmospheric correction after mosaicing, but MODIS products produced with atmospheric correction before mosaicing, it will be difficult to compare products such as the NOVI or EVI from the two sensors.
Q (Dr. Tateishi): What data is available from JAXA to PIs after launch of ADEOS-II?
A (Dr. Zhang): From Level 1 B data and everything which follow that (1 km resolution only) including product data from LTSK1, LTSK10 and LTSK9.
Q (Dr. Awaya): Can we order the data from JAXA?
A: Yes.

4. Dr. Vu Saito briefly talked about GLI 250m data referring to his presentation made in the preliminary session.
- hardware problems
- difficulties in acquiring data.
Q (Dr.Suga): Is that downlink data? Can we directly acquire the downlink data?
A: No. It is directly transmitted only to stations previously allowed by JAXA.
- capability limitation
- requirements from users
- communication satellite utilization
Q(Dr. Honda): Can we utilize communication satellite for downlinking the 250-m data?
A(Dr. Vu Saito): It may be difficult at this stage.
Dr. Honda's Comments: Data management working group will explain about distribution of data to PIs. So please attend at the meeting if you want to know about how to get information from JAXA.

5. Questions on the presentation made by Mr. Mitomi and Dr. Zhang continued.
Q (Dr. Duong): Is there any map showing availability of GLI 250-m resolution over the world (at least in planning)?
A (Dr. Vu Saito): We had made a rough analysis last year. More analysis is needed.
Q(Dr. Duong): Is there possibility to get L1B scene product with PGCI and atmospheric correction?
A(Dr. Vu Saito): Please send requests to the leader of your team with respect to your questions. And we will receive them from your leader. Decision will be made based on the recommendations/ coordinations of the group leaders.
