GLI observes spring coming to seas around Japan
These images depict chlorophyll-a concentration (CHLA; upper), and sea-surface temperature (SST; lower) of seas around Japan observed by
GLI on March 19, 2003.
The CHLA image shows high CHLA in the seas from the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula to the central Japan Sea (indicated in red and yellow), Seto Inland Sea, Ise Bay and Sendai Bay. (The CHLA in this image might be higher than the actual CHLA; validation and calibration with sea truth experiments will improve the
GLI data accuracy.)
The SST image shows the Kuroshio current that meanders from Yakushima Island toward offshore of the Kii Peninsula in the Pacific Ocean. Many whirlpools of various sizes caused by a strong water-temperature gradient can be seen in the Japan Sea.
GLI products such as CHLA and SST contribute to investigating fishery areas, and protecting and managing marine resources.
