Iceland and the Antarctic captured by GLI

Iceland captured by GLI

Displayed above is a GLI image of Iceland near the Arctic Circle. Iceland reflects the morning sunlight appeared from behind the clouds over around the Norwegian Sea. To the north of Iceland rises the thick ice sheet of Greenland in the dark Polar night.
This image is GLI 1km resolution bands 13 (678nm), 8 (545nm), 5 (460nm) RGB true color image acquired on January 25 2003.

The Antarctic captured by GLI
» See Larger Image (1000×882pixels:178KB)

Above three images are (a) RGB true color image, (b) cloud and snow/ice classification image, and (c) brightness temperature image of snow area of the Antarctic, respectively. Antarctic ice sheet was observed from the Antarctic Peninsula to the Ross Ice Shelf (Image (a)). Snow over land, snow over sea ice, and clouds in the true color image are classified and shown in red, pink, and grey colors, respectively (Image (b)). You can see temperature variation (blue = cold, red = warm) resulted from the spatial variation of ice sheet thickness from 0 m to 3000 m (Image (c)).
These images are GLI 1km resolution images acquired on January 25 2003. The image (a) is GLI bands 13 (678nm), 8 (545nm), 5 (460nm) RGB true color image and the image (c) uses band 35 (11 µm) in the thermal infrared wavelength region. Infrared data: Japan Weather Association
