Focus on Kyushu : Processing on the first 250 m resolution GLI image

ADEOS-II 250 m Global Imager (GLI) imagery, captured around 11:30 on January 25, 2003, showing the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.
The left image shows a true color composite generated by displaying GLI spectral channel 22 (660 nm) in red, channel 21 (545 nm) in green, and the channel 20 (460 nm) in blue. The colors in a true color image resembles those as seen by the human eye.
The smoke plume from the Mt. Sakurajima volcano in the southern part of the island is clearly visible, drifting in a northeastern direction. Evident in the images are also the differences in the ocean color inside and outside the embankment in Isahaya Bay in northwest.
The left imageThe right image

The right, false color, image is derived from spectral channels 28 (1640nm), 23 (825 nm) and 22 (660nm): wavelengths ranging from red to thenear-infrared region. Green colors indicate vegetation; pink shows soil and dry grass; blue is snow and ice; and purple urban areas. The pink colors around parts of Mt. Aso Caldera in central Kyushu. While it is not possible to distinguish clouds from snow in the true color image (left), it is feasible in the right, false color image, where clouds appear while and snow appears blue.
Visible in the images are also the airports in Fukuoka and Saga in the north, and the petroleum base around Kagoshima Bay in the south.
