Caveats for the Sea Ice Concentration Products

Algorithm development PI : Josefino C. Comiso
(NASA Goddard Space Flight Center)

The sea ice concentration maps that are currently being released were generated without the benefit of a rigorous check by the algorithm scientist, J. C. Comiso, who is currently conducting the Antarctic AMSR-E Sea Ice (AASI) validation campaign. The tie points for open water and consolidate ice used in the algorithm were tested with a previously calibrated data and may not be consistent with the current calibration. As a result, a number of ice concentration features within the pack may have greater errors than expected. For example, the location of the 10% ice edge may not be accurate because the tie point for open water currently used may be different from that required for the present data set. Also, the open ocean mask and the land/ocean boundary mask may need some adjustments for optimal accuracy. The maps, however, provides generally acceptable representation of the sea ice cover. Any shortcomings will be identified and corrected in the next release.
