- Space Platforms for Water and Climate Observations - Review

At the Awaji Symposium, we:
  • Reviewed the plans for provision of EO satellite data in support of water and climate issues:
ADEOS-II, Envisat, Aqua, TRMM/GPM, NPOESS
  • Focused discussions of expert opinion from specific domains of water, land, ocean, atmosphere.
  • Through the panel discussion, considered pecific actions necessary for improved utilization
  • Specific actions:
    • Practical: steps to improve value to users of current data
    • Programmatic: steps to harmonize future mission plans
    • Institutional: CEOS Utilization Task Force, IGOS Water Cycle Theme
    • International: Validate priorities and provision of data within international initiatives: WSSD, UNFCCC, WWF, G8 etc.
Panel discussion outcomes
The Panel recognized the need for:
  • maximizing opportunities for utilization - through IGOS
  • Increased funding
  • instruments on operational satellites
  • Education and Training
  • International and national/regional linkages with users
  • Transition from research to operations
  • Redundancy of sensors better products
  • Easy access
  • An integrated data segment - from data to services
  • Development on the user side also necessary - need for support technology
  • WSSD follow-up
